The moment I realised I’d made the right choice borrowing the BMW S1000RR instead of my regular BMW R1200RT arrived as the S1000RR hit an indicated 181mph down the main straight at the Nurburgring. I was left giggling like a little boy before realising I was going to have to lose some speed into Antonibusche, shut the throttle and sat up.

The BMW S1000RR isn’t my long term test bike as I am running an R1200RT but a training course at the Nurburgring was far more suited to the class-leading superbike rather than a brilliant tourer.

Swopping bikes with S1000RR keeper Trevor Franklin on a Friday meant I had a day and a bit to get ready for the trip. First up was a change of tyres as Franklin’s choice of Pirelli Diable Supercorsa BSB were going to be a horror show if it was wet on the way or back. Or more worryingly, while I was there.

A set of Metzler M5 Interacts were put on instead. BMW were kind enough to send in one of the very clever moulded tailpacks for the bike. Unfortunately, Franklin’s choice of full Akrapovic exhaust meant there are no pillion footrests and it wouldn’t fit. Instead I used my new Kriega R30 waterproof rucksack which was rammed with clothes, cameras, notebook and waterproofs. Despite a number of soakings it was perfect and was as comfortable as any rucksack could have been.

Hell for Leather Labrador Trip and Product Reviews

Hell for Leather web based magazine, used Kriega products on another trip to Labrador. The following is their independent review on from their website Hell for Leather

Kriega makes some of the most cleverly designed and high quality motorcycle luggage and accessories on the market. For the Labrador trip, we equipped both bikes with front haul loops and I made up for the F800GS’s lack of a top box with a US-30 tail pack. How’d they work?

Kriega Front Haul Loop
Taking a couple of huge, heavy motorcycles into the wilderness was a bit daunting. Not because we were worried about mechanical problems, but rather failures of the human kind. What if we got the 500lbs (before luggage) R1200GS stuck in the mud? What if I crashed one of the bikes into a swamp? How would we get it out with no other help on hand? We fitted these haul loops in case we had to manhandle the bikes through any problems.

Intended for Enduro racing, where you often have to coax your bike out of trouble or over obstacles using manpower, the Kriga Haul Loops are extremely strong, semi-rigid straps that fit onto any motorycles forks. The rigidity makes them stand proud of the forks, making it easy to grasp without needing to look for them, while materials like Hypalon and Toughtek fabrics along with big stainless steel buckles mean they’ll support the weight of even these enormous bikes.

Thankfully, we didn’t have to test the strength of the haul loops as the bike stayed on road during my crash and we managed to stay out of trouble otherwise. To supplement the loops, we also packed four ratchet straps that we needed for the ferry crossings anyways, but could have done double duty as tow straps or a jerry-rigged winch in an emergency. At $35 and adding virtually no weight, these are a no brainer for anyone that might ever need to haul a bike around.

Kriega US Liner

Almost forgot about this one. We got these to use with our Kriega R35 rucksacks that we didn't end up taking along on this trip, but we did take these waterproof bags. It’s essentially just a 25-liter dry sack that seals by rolling the top down over itself and buckling the ends together. I kept my clothes inside this in my panniers until a taco’d them, then I strapped this sack to the 800’s luggage rack for the rest of the trip. Even during torrential rain, it kept all my clothes completely dry. Versatile, effective, cheap ($45).
Kriega US-30 Tail Pack
Composed of two separate bags — the US-20 and US-10 — the US-30 tail pack gives you 30 liters of totally waterproof storage that straps easily to the pillion seat of any bike. Two straps pass under that seat and buckle onto the US-20, which then connects to the US-10 in a similar manner. You can run either pack by itself as well. Both packs are made from rip-stop nylon with tough rubberized reinforcements on the top and bottom to prevent them from sliding and to protect against abrasion. Like the US Liner, they’re waterproof dry sacks that roll closed, but these feature and additional buckle to keep that roll totally secure and the compression straps you connect them with allow you to compress them very tightly. There’s external water resistant zipper compartments on the tops of both.
I used the US-10 to hold all my various layers of foul weather riding gear: three pairs of spare gloves, thermals, seal socks, Gore-Tex jacket liner, fleece, balaclava, neck roll, etc. The US-25 served as a compressible, waterproof stuff sack for my down sleeping bag. Down looses its thermal properties if it gets wet, so it’s crucial you keep sleeping bags made from it dry, the US-25 did that. I kept my passport and all the bike documentation in the top zipper compartment of the US-10. It’s not claimed to be 100 percent waterproof, but made from waterproof material and equipped with a rubberized, shielded zipper it kept everything dry even in some really nasty storms.
To say these packs are overbuilt would be an understatement. They stood up to every weather condition we experienced along the way including days of torrential rain and even more days of ridiculous heat. They remained completely stable and secure even at speeds far in excess of 100mph and only shifted slightly, as you can see, when I cartwheeled the 800 down a gravel road at 50 or 60mph. They stood up to all that abuse and served as my pillow ever night for two weeks.
An ingenious touch are the removable, washable, white liners. Dark out? You can still find what’s in the bags.
Since these will work on essentially any bike and are so incredibly versatile, I plan to use them for every bike trip I take in the future and expect them to last for years and years. A lifetime luggage solution that’ll work anywhere, anytime for $178? It’s almost too good to be true.
You’re probably detecting that I really love Kriega gear by now and it’s true, I do. Of course it helps that the company offers such solid customer support and really believes in its product. They gave us these bags for the Labrador trip and I deal directly with the customer’s owners, but judging by evidence I’ve seen on some of the forums I participate in, regular customers get the same kind of treatment I do as a journalist. I even witnessed Dom, the guy behind Kriega, talk himself out of a dead certain sale to a guy that wanted to use one of his bags for adventure racing. Dom simply didn’t believe that his were the best possible products for that guy and told him so. Awesome stuff.

USA BMW GS Trophy Team Training in California

The USA BMW GS Trophy Team, consisting of Bill Dragoo, Iain Glynn and Shannon Markle trained with Jon Beck and the 2008 USA Team. 1300 miles of off road adventure training to be prepared for the Africa event in November.

A lot of training went into riding in the sand dunes. Shannon had a great dismount in the video below. Score 8.5 for the hand stand, half twist. Full 10 if had landed on both feet!

Australia's Carryology Review of the Kriega R25 | Specialist Carry

Our first specialist carry post revolved around riding your bike with a chainsaw. This time we introduce you to a potentially better way to carry when you’re halfway through your mid life crisis doing 40 clicks an hour on a Harley you paid too much for – Enter the Kriega R25.

The UK based Kreiga produces some of the worlds best motorbike packs. The funny thing is, that in designing for such specific use, they’ve stumbled upon a design that most other active daypacks really need to learn from*

The harness design for the Kreiga follows the shape of your ribcage, but we aren’t sure how far the harness stretches. And honestly, if you’re too big for the harness to fit, you might need a different solution anyway.

This design hugs the pack to your body, without then locking it to your hips. You can still bend and twist, and the pack will remain stable with your upper body. Flexibility is key here, you don’t want to be the tin man while riding right?

The packs themselves have quite a few other kinda cool details. Chest pockets (for ready access stuff like phones), bomber compression, streamlined shapes, and good weather proofing all backed by a nutsa 10 year warranty.

While not relevant for most of our community (all the non-bikers), we’re hoping that some other brands will understand just what a breakthrough this strap system is. Imagine a mountain pack that let you do backcountry rodeos with all your avvy gear held tight to your back?! The possibilities are endless…

*OK, we need to step back for a second and understand the general backpack market to grok why these packs are so unique. In semi-rigid trekking packs, the waist-belt takes some of the load from your shoulders and rests it on your hips. In smaller days packs, when designers wanted to stop the pack swinging about during activity, they borrowed this waist-belt idea as a way to stabilise the pack. But it has never really worked properly.

In activity, your back usually wants to bend (picture a skier or cyclist bending forwards against the wind). Add some twisting, and you can understand how much your shoulders keep changing their alignment with your hips. The problem with waist-straps is that if there is anything at all rigid in your pack, the waist-belt stops you bending or twisting – instead tying you to the straight shape of your pack.

Now you can see why we like the Kriega so much.

An Awareness Motorcycle Journey

Neale Bayly, founder of Wellspring International Outreach has been involved with raising funds for buildings and supplies for the children of Moquegua in Peru. In fact Neale just left the USA to make another motorcycle journey to the children, hoping to bring more awareness to their story. We all know Neale Bayly is a photojournalist for Speed TV, Motorcyclist, Ultimate Motorcycling and more. He travels the world extensively for his job. During an adventure motorcycle ride to Peru he met Father Gio, and learned about his work with the poor and needy in some of the more remote parts of the country. With Gio’s death in 2001 Neale was connected with Gio’s sister, Maria Fitzgerald. Maria has been fundraising for the abandoned children of Moquegua since the early 1990s. This resulted in the forming of Wellspring International Outreach, after the duo traveled to Peru in January 2008 to arrange medical care to the children. Neale's goal through Wellspring is to build a new home and a secure future for these children in need

What are we doing?

BMW MOA RALLY

Team Kriega Finishes 2nd in Class 40 of SCORE International Baja 500

He has ridden in, filmed, edited and produced a film ELEMENTS, that combines free riding video with wonderful vistas and well as spectacular riding. Solo or with friends, the riding and scenery. mixed with great audio, keeps you tuned in for more and more.

We liked it so much, we contacted Steve and said what's next? After some discussion we agreed to supply him with some equipment for his pending Elements 2 later this year. This type of film making shows the potential of free riding and commitment by Steve and others to keep public lands accessible to riding.

SCORE International Post Baja 250 Results

Great News! Team Kriega officially finished 2nd in the Class 40 moto group, just behind Franco and Johnson.

Results (405x):

Gabriel Bolton and Kay Awaad also finished much better than originally thought. Their Sportsman Class (over 250cc) Moto results show them 6th in class and 61st overall, out of all the 257 entries. Great results (see Kay Awaad below - 259x)

BMW ON Magazine Reviews R8 Waistpack

BMW ON Magazine conducted a detailed review of the Kriega R8 Magazine.

Kit says: The Kriega R8 is undoubtedly the best waist pack I have ever used on a motorcycle. While riding over two-foot high “whoops,” through boulder patches and high-speed sand washes, the R8 was virtually unnoticeable. It remained firmly in place with no pressure points jabbing me in the back. There was no bouncing or shifting Kriega R8 Enduro Waistpack & Tool Roll of the contents. There is nothing complicated, fancy nor glitzy about the R8. It’s all about the design, construction and function.

Speed TV uses R8 for video equipment on BMW Launch in Portugal

SpeedTV used Kriega's R8 waistpack (without the tool roll inside) to carry onboard video equipment for their test runs of the new BMW S1000RR in Portugal last month. The waistpack carried everything they needed and then some. It fit closely to the body and stayed in position as the whipped the new machine through its paces. The R8 is not just for off road applications!

BBC News: Dakar Rally challenge for Scottish lawyer

A Scottish lawyer is quitting his day job for a month to compete in the world's toughest endurance race.
Ten years ago, Paul Carlyle, from South Lanarkshire, could not even ride a motorcycle but he now plans to enter the notorious Dakar Rally in January.

The 38-year-old, who lives in Edinburgh, said taking part in the 5,600 mile marathon was a one-off opportunity of a lifetime.
He has spent five years preparing for the challenge.
Mr Carlye, an intellectual property lawyer and a partner at Shepherd and Wedderburn in the capital, is aiming to follow in the footsteps of Glaswegian Ewan Buchan, who became the first Scot to complete the rally on a motorbike earlier this year.
He will travel the equivalent of the distance between London and Edinburgh, off road, every day for more than a fortnight.
He said: "The Dakar is the toughest motor race in the world.

"It is a test of endurance, speed and navigation as well as luck. Only 40% of the starting riders will finish each year and my target is to be one of them.

"It's a once in a lifetime chance to take part in the top desert race in the world, riding alongside top factory riders."
The rally, which historically ended at Dakar in Senegal, will take place in South America for the second year running in 2010.
Starting in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the route will head north over the mountains to the Atacama desert in Chile, before heading south to Santiago and back to Buenos Aires.

Mr Carlyle, who is sponsored by equipment firm Kriega and supported by Desert Rose Racing, said: "It's difficult to know what to expect because the Dakar historically is very much in North Africa and that's where I've done most of my desert racing to date.
"The fact that it's moved to South America makes it a bit harder to assess what it will be like."
The biking enthusiast caught the Dakar bug after getting to know former winner, Frenchman Cyril Despres, at a charity event in the Moroccan desert.
The lawyer has been working hard on his fitness, taking part in triathlons and endurance cycling.

As I’ve probably mentioned before, there is something deeply satisfying about fitting quality aftermarket parts to your bike – an almost Zen pleasure. And you can get similar enjoyment from using well-made and beautifully designed kit. Whether it’s a Shoei helmet or a pair of Alpinestar Tech 10s, the motocross kit bag can contain some wonderfully constructed softwear. But a hydration pack? Can there really be much difference between a budget bag from a camping store and the high-end products from top manufacturers in the market place? In a word, yes.
Last month I reviewed the Haul Strap from Kreiga, and this month it’s the turn of its three-litre hydration pack – the Hydro 3 – which I also picked up at the Dirt Bike Show last November.
I’ve been using a Scott pack for a couple of seasons and although it’s been okay, the bladder had started to leak and the straps were beginning to fall apart. It’s also fairly inflexible for anything other than just carrying a few litres of isotonic drink and a plug spanner. Try going on a full enduro, beach race or even a trail ride with it and there’s just no room for anything else, so an upgrade was well overdue and, to be honest, the Kriega was the one I wanted.
The main reason I wanted a hydration pack from this little-known British company is because they are specifically designed for motorcyclists and motorcycle sport, rather than being a generic ‘all sports’ pack. Hence, you really get the impression that the designers actually use the products they make. Or, at the very least, they spend a lot of time talking to people who do. Either way, the hydration pack oozes a combination of intelligent design and quality manufacture. The straps are well padded with a ventilated foam material, and they are adjustable at both ends to cope with every body shape, from a six stone waif to an oversize hunchback. There is a quick release buckle that secures the pack across your chest and another that goes around your waist. Once buckled up, this baby is going nowhere.
The actual body of the pack, which sits against your back, is panelled with the same ventilated foam material to keep everything nice and cool, and there is a sensible hook to hang the thing up when it’s full with your drink.
The front of the bag has the usual section to hold the reservoir plus an additional pocket that runs the full length of the unit; both pockets have waterproof zips. On top of this there is a lattice of elastic cord that will secure a set of waterproof trousers or a lightweight jacket, plus the attachment points for the optional five-litre pack (£25). Perfect.
The smart design continues with the fully reversible (and thus easily washable) lightweight bladder inside. It’s clearly marked up with the capacity in fluid ounces and litres, has a full-width non-fiddly opening aperture, a cunning Velcro-assisted closing mechanism that seals the thing tighter than a particularly nervous crab’s bottom, and the whole thing clips in place at the top of the pack.
To complete the Hydro-3, the drinking tube is fully removable (without spilling all the contents as there is a valve) and neoprene insulated to keep it from either heating up or cooling down too much, plus it’s also finished with a switchable and sturdy bite valve. Phew, I think that’s covered the lot.
Oh shit, I forgot to fully mention the optional five-litre add-on pack (the US-5) which, unsurprisingly, can be attached onto the Hydro 3 to increase the capacity by, err… slightly over 4.9 litres, which is ideal for a racing toolkit, medium-sized packed lunch or about three cans of Stella, depending on how seriously you are taking things. What’s more, if it’s too heavy to carry on the backpack, the US-5 can be easily bolted onto your front or rear mudguard using the sturdy attachment points. Lovely.
So that’s about it, except to say that having used the pack on the last few hare ‘n’ hounds of the season

I can report that aside from being beautifully designed and made, it’s comfortable, practical to race with and easy to drink from on the fly.
You get a real impression of quality from Kriega products, and not only are they durable, practical and well-priced, but they also come with a ten-year guarantee, which hints at the firm’s confidence in its own design. I really don’t think there is a better biking hydration pack on the market. But if there is, I really don’t care, because this one is excellent.

Grant and I wore these to ride from LA to Laguna Seca and back.
The idea behind the Kriega R35 is to offer a large capacity backpack
specifically tailored to the ergonomics of riding a motorcycle. As
such, the load isn't carried through your shoulders or on your hips
like with a hiking pack, but through your chest and onto your hips.
Initially, that looks and feels awkward, but once you're in a riding
position it's totally comfortable.

Update: Matrix Motosports is the official importer and distributor of
Kriega products in the US.

The R35 is the largest pack offered by Kriega and its 35-liter
capacity will be enough for most people's needs. We filled them to
overflowing with laptops and camera gear, then realized we didn't
have any space for clean undies. At least that's Grant's excuse.

Because they're designed specifically to work in a riding position,
you won't be able to use the Kriega as a day-to-day off-bike pack,
but once you've worn one on a long ride you'll appreciate the
specialization. Virtually no weight is carried through the shoulder
straps and they're cut in such a way that they leave your neck and
shoulders free to move naturally and uninhibited. That'll be a
particular boon to sports riders, who will be able to move about the
bike unencumbered, even while carrying a heavy load.

In addition to the large main compartment, there's multiple pockets
with water-resistant zips capable of carrying a variety of shapes and
weights. I filled the outer pockets with tools and zip ties so they'd
be easily accessible and stuffed my Macbook into the A4-sized
sleeve in the main compartment. There's a plastic divider between
the carrying area and the frame, ensuring that sharp corners and
hard object won't poke you in the back or prove a risk in a crash.
On the outside, there's bungees and a mesh pocket for smelly socks
or anything that needs to be stored externally, while compression
straps cinch the whole thing down securely. No straps, zips or
anything fly loose in the wind.

To secure the R35, you put it over your shoulders, zip up the main
zip then pull the hip straps tight. Once you've gotten a good fit,
there's no more need for adjustment, just zip yourself in and out as
you see fit. inside that front harness are two pockets big enough for
an iPhone, cash and cards and necessary documentation, having
them right there is really convenient.

I wore the R35 with my Alpinestars MX-1 one-piece and it worked
just fine with the aerodynamic hump.

Despite the comfort and maneuverability, the R35 can't work magic;
after a couple of hours we had to stop and move some weight out of
the Kriegas and into our tailpacks. My laptop in particular seemed
to be a stretch too far, but considering it was in there with a week's
worth of clothes, a pair of shoes, toiletries and other odds and ends,
that's still pretty impressive. Weight transfered and the packs
proved comfortable for the rest of the 800-ish mile round trip. The
$185 R35 is easily the most comfortable backpack I've worn on a motorcycle.

The Arizona Trail Riders are excited to be hosting the Mogollon Rim Rendezvous AMA National Dual Sport and Adventure Ride on October 24-25, 2009 in the cool pine forests surrounding Payson, Arizona.

This two-day event will feature routes suited for all levels of riders and you can expect everything from twisty paved highways to challenging Hero sections. The town of Payson is nestled at the base of the Mogollon Rim in Central Arizona at an elevation of 4921' with excellent alpine-like riding to the north at an elevation of 7500', and rugged high desert riding to the south at an elevation of 2500'. The scenery as you ride through the area is really amazing and they have 'A', 'B', and 'C' routes which will take you on a grand tour through all the elevations…so don’t forget that camera.

As I’ve climbed closer to the “middle age” mark, I’ve come to realize I like to wear a backpack while I’m riding. Not only can I stuff a water bottle or two inside it, but a pack is good for carrying an extra set of goggles and gloves and snacks. However, some packs I’ve worn are uncomfortable and dig in to my armpits, making me wonder why I even wore the darn thing.

I recently tested the Kriega Hydro-3 pack and was pleasantly surprised. The unique Quadloc LITE Harness System is amazing. Unlike normal packs and other hydration bags, this harness offers unmatched comfort. The adjustable back and strap holders offer both an ideal fit and eliminate loose straps (which can act like mini whips when speeds exceed 50 mph — crack!). Kriega says the pack offers “total arm freedom.”

You have to wear it to believe it, but it’s true. It saves your pits from being rubbed raw and prevents the pack from dancing around on your back when riding hard. This “race-spec” pack offers a perfect design for a woods or desert racer.

To secure the harness, adjust the straps to fit you and then insert one push-button buckle and that’s it. A removable waist strap offers an even better fit and impressive stability. I had trouble with the circular buckle in the Glamis dunes as the sand made it difficult to open and close, but that’s about all I can find wrong with the Kriega.

Inside the Hydro-3 is a 3-liter Hydrapak reservoir and one liter of storage. I love the Hydrapak design and ease of cleaning.

The black outer shell has a high-visibility front and back and the pack comes with a 10-year guarantee. One pack for the next decade of riding sounds like a great purchase to me. For those who need more storage, Kriega has optional strap-on 5- and 10-liter dry packs.

Neale Bayly Visits Orphanage in Peru

Neale Bayly, a journalist for Speed, Motorcyclist, Motorcycle USA, and many more just completed a one week trip through the high altitude mountains of Peru. His mission - to visit the orphanage for the abandoned children of Moquegua. His earlier travels through the area and experience with the orphanage made him form the Wellspring International Outreach with Dr. Matt Mahar to provide funding and resources to the children and the orphanage.

Matrix Motosports and Kriega learned of his plans to travel there by motorcycle in April 2009 and offered to provide equipment to support that excursion. We are happy to report that the trip was successful for Neale and all returned home safely. Neale will be producing a video for release on the project and will providing some details in a Speed TV appearance on June 18 in conjunction with the AMA racing shows.

Kriega expands USA market and involvement

Since November 2008 Matrix Motosports has been the designated importer and distributor of Kriega products for North America. As part of that commitment we represented Kriega at the US National Dealer Expo in Indy. We have also developed and launched the exclusive www.kriega.us website. All of which has helped grow brand recognition. The world knew Kriega was the best, we just needed to help show the Americas.

We have also been working with journalist and publications to review Kriega products and tell us what the think. Those reviews are starting to come out now and we will announce those results in this blog as they become available.
